Dixit – The Cult Game of Storytelling and Imagination
A picture is worth a thousand words... but which one will you choose?
In Dixit, each player holds large-format cards illustrated with dreamlike, surreal, and beautiful paintings. Each turn, a player becomes the Storyteller. They choose one of their cards and say a phrase, a word, or even a movie title inspired by the image. The other players then choose a card from their own hand that also matches this description.
The goal of the game? To find the storyteller's card among all those placed on the table. But be careful: the storyteller must be neither too obvious nor too mysterious!
A unique "Subtlety and Bluff" mechanic
-
The Storyteller's Dilemma: If everyone finds your card, you score 0 points. If no one finds it, you score 0 points. You must therefore find a riddle that some players will understand, but not all.
-
The Opponent's Trap: As a player, your goal is to place a card so close to the storyteller's description that others will vote for yours. Each vote for your card earns you bonus points!
-
The Art of Marie Cardouat: Dixit's success relies heavily on its illustrations. Each card is a work of art open to dozens of different interpretations.
-
The Components: The box often serves as a score track with a lily pad path where small colorful wooden bunnies advance.
Why Dixit is an essential addition to any game library?
-
Universal: It can be played with children, grandparents, friends, or people who don't speak the same language. Emotion and imagery take precedence over rules.
-
Learn in 1 minute: "I say a phrase, you play a card." That's it. The depth comes from the connection between players.
-
An infinite number of expansions: If you know the cards by heart, there are more than 10 expansions (Quest, Odyssey, Memories...) with different illustrators to renew the dreamlike quality.
-
Goodwill: Unlike many games, Dixit is a gentle experience. You often come away feeling peaceful, having discovered how your loved ones think.
